The Normanton Church Wedding of Anna and James

The Normanton Church Wedding of Anna and James

Amanda Forman Photography | Normanton Church Wedding | Rutland Golf Course

Friday 13th may be unlucky for some but for Anna and James it is a date they will remember fondly for many many years to come. I’ll also remember this day for years to come, but for slight different reasons #TheCameraThatDidNotDefyGravity; but such events are why professionals always carry more than one!

The day was a cloudy one with the threat of rain, and as soon as Tom and I arrived and saw Anna’s beautiful white lace dress Tom raced home to get my trusty wellies and a white sheet for Anna to stand on for photos. We will never knowingly muddy a dress, especially not one as beautiful as Anna’s!! More on this later…

Bridal prep took place in the cottage at Rutland Water Golf course, we were greeted by Anna, her 3 bridesmaids and a third lady who we fondly nicknamed the Interloper. This particular interloper, a non-bridesmaid but good friend had travelled from Australia, and provided much amusement by spending the morning running around in an attempt to avoid an accidental photo-bomb. She failed 🙂

Normanton Church Wedding

When I am shooting a wedding solo; I like to try and get to the church or ceremony venue ahead of time to make sure I can get a few photos of the groom and his entourage, and when you are photographing a wedding at Normanton Church the backdrop makes this even better!

This time however Anna was the one who would be arriving first! Did you know you can choose which way you would like to face when getting married inside Normanton church? And as there is only one entrance and exit from the church, if you want to walk down the aisle the way Anna did then you need to arrive early and hide in the back – don’t worry there’s loads of space and you can spy on all of the guests arriving too!

With Anna safely hidden I went back outside to photograph early arriving guest and James looking calm and collected (read nervous). I assumed my role of chief button hole pinner and instructed Damo in exactly how to pin the button hole on for James – a skill that has taken me time to perfect but which I am very proud of.

After a truly beautiful ceremony Tom ushered all of the guests back to Rutland Water Golf Course, whilst I stayed behind and snuck in a few photos of the newlyweds at Normanton Church. We didn’t have the venue for long but I knew if we worked quickly we could get some memories for them, and it was a nice way for them to take in the fact that THEY WERE NOW MARRIED!

It was at this exact moment one of my cameras decided to take a topple from my holster and smashed on the floor. After a heart dropping moment I gathered myself together, safe in the knowledge that I did in fact have two cameras and several other lenses so everything was fine and most importantly, the photography could continue. But this my dear reader is the reason you should always choose a photographer that does in fact have more than one camera. I have never had this happen to me before but boy am I glad I was prepared for it.

Not being put off by the weather and the fact we couldn’t race around in the golf buggies (Tom was secretly pretty upset about that) we had arrived early to look for some new locations for the couple portraits at Rutland Water Golf course and it really paid off. I actually like it when the weather throws us a curve ball like this, it forces me to think outside of the box and we came up with some great locations. And of course with the welly boots we had even more scope.

I specialise in working with couples who don’t ‘really’ want to have their photo taken but at the same time would like photographs to remember their day by. Whilst I will advise you on, what to do, where to stand, and give some simple instructions. I also work to get natural reactions from you, along with my wonderful husband Tom, we aim to capture the real you, the couple that your friends and family see and not the couple who are being forced to stand and smile at the camera. This is also where things like the welly boots come in to play. There is just no way you can feel too posed when wearing a wedding dress and welly boots, try it, I dare you!

We didn’t want the bride and groom to go hungry and miss their canapés, so Tom ran off to fetch some for them, they were very well received – and I think some of the best canapés I have seen at any wedding, proper food and so comforting on a rainy, cloudy day.

I will leave you with a few images from the reception, and some of my favourite dance floor shots, such an awesome crowd and fuelled by the biggest wheel of cheese I have ever seen!! They had a cake of cheese as their wedding cake, a fantastic idea, check the credits below for the link.

The Richmond Hill Hotel & Lovekyn Chapel Wedding of Ash & Ruta

I First met Ash and Ruta on a Sunny evening in June this year. I knew immediately that theirs was going to be a wedding I would remember. The way they look at each other, and how they naturally are so at ease together, always giggling and making jokes was so wonderful to see and their wedding day was no different.

On the 2nd September Charlotte and Oz (Michael) tied the knot at St Peter’s Church in Empingham followed by a reception at Rutland Water Golf Course in my new home county Rutland.
I knew as soon as I met Charlotte and Oz that their wedding would be a special one, not least because of the fact that Charlotte worked at Harley Davidson and would be escorted to the wedding by 4 Harleys and two armoured trucks!

Charlotte and her bridesmaids along with her mum and aunt got ready at Rutland Water golf course in their new bridal suite, and wow what a beautiful room. All of the rooms at Rutland Water Golf Course have been either newly created or newly re furbished, decorated beautifully with the Bridal suite having a purely luxurious bathroom this was the perfect place for Charlotte and the girls to be pampered and get ready.

When I arrived the girls had started on hair and make up, looked after by the wonderful Vivienne Welford from The Ivy Lodge in Stamford and Frankie from Georges in Leicester who was braiding and curling and pinning away.

Where were your accessories and shoes from?

My veil was a one off and designed and made especially for me to match my dress. My hair piece was from the same place where we got my dress from Annie Laurie Bridal and my shoes were from ASOS. I ordered many different types to try on with the dress and found the pair I had went really well with my dress.

I have never seen a bride as happy as when her aunt brought Charlotte this toothbrush!! Charlotte had stayed the night before (unplanned) and didn’t have one with her.

Before long it was time to get Charlotte ready. Her Aunt was in charge of helping and everyone else left the room. This is always a good idea on the wedding morning as it gives the you (the bride) 5 minutes to just breath and take in everything that has been going on.

Who was your dress by and where did you buy it?
My dress was designed Agnes a polish wedding dress designer, I was the first person to buy the dress it had only just been released and I purchased it from Annie Laurie Bridal in Easton on the hill as they were recommended to me. My mother and My auntie came with me to help me choose it. This was one of the most amazing memories for a girl to have, as you are in your element and you feel like a princess.

Meanwhile over at the White Horse pub in Empingham Oz had arrived, much to the relief of my second photographer who had arrived 30 minutes earlier and was panicking that she had no groom! Their morning, as is usually the case on the grooms side, was a different affair, think less pampering, more beer!
Oz was joined by his groomsmen and parents along with several members of the wedding party.

Where did oz pick up his and his groomsmens suits?

Oz and His groomsmen got the suits from Greenwoods. This was hilarious, they sent me pictures of the best man in a kilt and told me this was the outfit they had chosen.

Now for one of my favourite parts of the morning, the first time Dad see’s his little girl. Being a daddies girl myself this is the part that gets me the most, I loved seeing Charlottes dad’s face light up and I hope this is a photo they will treasure.

Where were your bridesmaids dresses from?

We are all big fans of ASOS and we ordered quite a few different styles and shades of pink from ASOS to try. Then we had a few girlie nights and a couple of fashion show with them each taking it in turns and trying them on. That’s how we choose the ones they wore. The great thing about ASOS is, they offer free returns, so we just sent the others back.

It was now time for me to leave and head to the church, I like to get there a little earlier so I can say hello to the groom, meet the vicar / registrars and (hopefully) photograph the bride arriving. In this case, Charlotte was so keen to get to the church she arrived a good 15 minutes early!!

The ceremony took place in St Peter’s Church in Empingham, Rutland only a short drive away from Rutland Water Golf Course.
Charlottes bridesmaids did a fantastic job of making sure her dress was beautifully set at the back before sitting down – thank you ladies!

We took a few moments outside the Church to capture some photos of the bridal party, with Empingham church being such a beautiful location it would be a shame not to. This church meant a lot to Charlotte and her family.

We didn’t have very long to capture the group shots on the day as Charlotte and Oz had arranged a FLY OVER! This was a first for me, and on speaking to one of the pilots later in the evening it seemed I gave them quite a laugh as I ran around trying to make sure I got a shot of Charlotte and Oz with the plane in view. What a spectacular site though!

Once groups were photographed it was time to take our couple away for a few photos of just the two of them. I know that whilst you want photos of the two of you on your wedding day you don’t want to spend your entire time taking them, that is why I split the portrait sessions in to three. It also means you get a little more variety.

We took Charlotte and Oz on a golf buggy down to an area that was a little more secluded and with an absolutely stunning view of Rutland Water. I think Oz and my husband may have enjoyed the buggy racing just a little too much.

Charlotte and Oz’s cake was created by the amazing Karen from Sticky Fingers Cake Creations, this woman is seriously talented!

One thing that Rutland Water Golf Course do that I LOVE, is allow their brides and grooms to have a confetti shot, they couldn’t have it at the church so this was a perfect time to throw the confetti and welcome all of the guests in for their wedding breakfast. And of course the little ones had to practice for their big days too 😊

Once Charlotte, Oz and the guests were safely seated, me, my second shooter and my wonderful husband/assistant tucked ourselves away in the bar to take a few minutes rest and to prepare the same day slideshow. This isn’t something all of my couples opt to add on to their collections but when they do they always love it, even the ones who say they aren’t very emotional end up with tears in their eyes.
Part way through editing however I noticed that the sun had indeed started to set, and having their permission in advance I pulled Charlotte and Oz away from their dinner (between main and desert – I’m not a monster) just for 10 minutes to capture these sunset images for them in a different location to the one we were in earlier.

After dinner it was just a small matter of speeches, quickly followed by the bouquet toss and the cake cutting. I love how competitive us women get when it comes to catching the bouquet!

Next we played our same day slideshow, which is effectively a slideshow of about 50-80 images I have edited whilst the couple are eating that show off their day from the start until usually just before dinner. I love seeing everyones reactions running from laughter to tears and it is a perfect lead in to the first dance as everyone is already gathered around.

Charlotte and Oz thank you for making me and my team feel so welcome. We loved every second of your day!

Looking back is there anything advice you would give other brides? Don’t panic, try not to be last minute.com like me. The run up to the wedding is non-stop and luckily, we had some amazing friends and family that helped so much with everything. Make sure you take in every second of the day because it goes just like that. Loads of people told us this and its so true. Get an amazing photographer like Amanda to capture those memories that just pass by so quickly, because at least in years to come you can look through that wedding album and remember them again and again.
