How to correctly pin your button hole

As a wedding photographer I see so many different types of buttonholes and a whole host of different ways of pinning them, some great some not so great.

Now unless you have been to lots of weddings as a member of the wedding party you can be forgiven for not knowing how to correctly pin your flower buttonhole. You can also be forgiven for thinking that the best way to correctly pin your buttonhole is to put it through the aptly named ‘buttonhole’ on your lapel. You would however be wrong.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO CORRECTLY PIN YOUR BUTTONHOLE

In order to hopefully provide some help to those planning their weddings, I visited one of my local incredible florists Isobel from Pickelberry flowers to get some tips on how to correctly pin your buttonhole.

STEP ONE

Locate the buttonhole itself on your lapel, you should aim for the main head of the buttonhole to go here. This will allow the buttonhole to line up nicely with the top of the lapel and will prevent you from ending up with any flowers or greenery touching your face.

STEP TWO

Once you have your buttonhole in place hold it with your left hand and flip the lapel over to show the back. This is where you will insert your pin.

STEP THREE

Now you insert the pin through the back of the lapel, through the buttonhole just below the flowers, and then back into the lapel. In the same way you would if you were stitching something into the fabric.

YOUR BUTTON HOLE IS NOW PINNED CORRECTLY

Your buttonhole is now firmly secure in place. Flip the lapel back over and admire your handiwork. My top tip would be to either have someone else pin your buttonhole on for you or to do this yourself when the jacket is hung up on the hanger as shown in the photos just to make it a little easier.

Now you are all set and ready to rock your correctly pinned buttonhole on your wedding day. It does make me a little sad though that in helping with this I will now miss out on photographing the faces of confusion I see every time but I feel like it is worth it for the end result.
